U.S. Federal Holidays 2027: Dates, Observed Dates and Employer Guide
Quick answer: There are 11 U.S. federal holidays in 2027. Three fall on a weekend and are observed on a different weekday by most federal employees:
- Juneteenth falls on Saturday, June 19 and is observed on Friday, June 18.
- Independence Day falls on Sunday, July 4 and is observed on Monday, July 5.
- Christmas Day falls on Saturday, December 25 and is observed on Friday, December 24.
Last reviewed: 20 August 2026.
Public holidays in the United States can affect work schedules, staffing, payroll and PTO planning.
For small business owners, the important point is that federal holidays, state holidays and company holidays are not always the same thing.
Federal holidays are established for federal employees. Private employers are generally not required by federal law to provide paid time off on federal holidays.
States can also recognise their own public holidays. However, a legal holiday does not always mean that every state office closes or that every state employee receives a paid day off.
If you only need the holiday coming up next, our next U.S. federal holiday tracker shows the next date and its observed date automatically.
U.S. Federal Holidays in 2027
These are the 11 federal holidays established for federal employees.
When a federal holiday falls on a Saturday, most federal employees observe it on the preceding Friday. When it falls on a Sunday, they normally observe it on the following Monday.

State Public Holidays in 2027
The state tables below focus on statewide public holidays and official dates that can affect normal work schedules or public services.
They are not an exhaustive list of every ceremonial day named in state law. Some states recognise many commemorative dates that do not close offices or create paid leave.
For each state, we use the official 2027 calendar where one has been published. Where the final annual calendar was not available by 20 August 2026, we use current law and recurring dates, then mark Governor-designated, negotiated or substitute dates as provisional.
Private employers should not assume that a state holiday requires the business to close or provide holiday pay.
A dash in the final column means no separate observed date or state note is needed.

Are Public Holidays Included in PTO?
Do public holidays count as PTO?
There is no single rule for private employers across the United States.
A company’s own leave policy normally determines how public holidays are handled.
Here are three common approaches.
1. Paid public holidays
Many employers give selected federal or company holidays as paid days off.
These days are usually separate from an employee’s normal PTO allowance.
2. Holidays included in a wider PTO allowance
Some employers use a combined PTO policy.
Employees may receive one overall allowance covering vacation, personal days or other types of absence.
Employers should explain clearly how public holidays fit into that allowance.
3. Unpaid holidays
Some businesses close on certain holidays without providing holiday pay to every employee.
This can be more common for some hourly, temporary or part-time arrangements.
Your policy should make it clear which holidays are paid and who qualifies.
Do Private Employers Have to Observe Federal Holidays?
Generally, no.
Federal holidays apply directly to federal government employees. They do not create a general federal requirement for private businesses to close or give employees paid leave.
A private employer can usually decide:
- which holidays the business closes for;
- whether those holidays are paid;
- which employees qualify;
- whether employees can swap a company holiday for another day;
- and how holiday work is paid.
State laws, employment contracts and collective bargaining agreements can create additional requirements.
Do Employees Get Extra Pay for Working on a Holiday?
Federal law does not generally require private employers to pay a higher rate simply because an employee works on a federal holiday.
For example, working on Christmas Day does not automatically create a federal right to time-and-a-half pay.
Normal overtime rules can still apply when the employee’s hours meet the legal overtime threshold.
Some states, contracts and company policies provide more generous holiday-pay arrangements.
Religious and Cultural Holidays
Not every important holiday appears on the federal holiday calendar.
Employees may request time away from work for religious observance.
Employers should consider their obligations to provide reasonable religious accommodation under applicable law.
A flexible holiday or PTO policy can also make it easier for employees to take time off for the days that matter to them.
Planning Public Holidays for Your Business
Add holidays before employees start booking PTO
Load your 2027 public holiday calendars early.
This helps employees and managers see which days are already non-working days before holiday requests begin.
Use different calendars for different locations
Do not assume every employee should have the same holiday calendar.
A business with employees in California, Texas and New York may need separate public holiday calendars.
Decide which holidays your company actually observes
A state recognising a holiday does not automatically mean a private employer must close.
Choose your company holidays and document them clearly.
Show holidays alongside employee leave
Managers need to see the full picture.
A shared calendar should show public holidays alongside vacation, PTO, sick leave and other absences.
TimeOff.Management lets you create different public holiday calendars and assign them to employees based on where they work.
Key Points for Employers
- Check the observed date. The actual holiday and the weekday closure are not always the same.
- Do not assume federal and state calendars match. Weekend rules can differ between states.
- Keep location calendars separate. This is especially important for businesses operating in several states.
- Explain your holiday-pay policy. Employees should know which holidays are paid.
- Review the calendar again before 2027. Some Governor-designated and negotiated calendars were not final when this guide was reviewed.
- Plan staffing early. Public holidays combined with PTO can create busy leave periods.
