Public Holidays in Spain 2027: National and Regional Dates
Public Holidays in Spain 2027: National and Regional Dates
Quick answer: Employees in Spain can have up to 14 paid, non-recoverable public holidays in 2027.
This normally includes:
- 12 national and autonomous community holidays;
- 2 local holidays chosen for each municipality.
There is no single public holiday calendar that works for every employee in Spain.
The correct calendar depends on the autonomous community and municipality where the employee works.
Last reviewed: 25 August 2026.
If you manage a team in Spain, public holidays affect more than annual leave.
They can change:
- staffing levels;
- customer cover;
- payroll;
- project deadlines;
- shift planning;
- and the number of people asking for a long weekend.
The difficult part is that Spain has national, regional, and local holidays.
A date observed in Andalusia may be a normal working day in Catalonia. Even neighbouring municipalities can have different local holidays.
That is why one generic Spain-wide calendar is rarely enough.
How Public Holidays Work in Spain
Spanish public holidays are known as fiestas laborales.
Under the Workers’ Statute, public holidays are paid and non-recoverable. There can be no more than 14 each year, and 2 of those are local holidays.
Four holidays must always be respected as national holidays:
- New Year’s Day;
- Labour Day;
- the National Day of Spain;
- Christmas Day.
Autonomous communities can choose their own traditional holidays.
They can also replace certain national dates or use the rest day created when a national holiday falls on a Sunday.
The final calendar is therefore built in three layers:
- National holidays.
- Autonomous community holidays.
- Two local holidays for the employee’s municipality.
Spain Public Holidays 2027: National Reference Dates
The table below shows the main national reference dates for 2027.
It is not a complete holiday calendar for every employee. Each autonomous community makes its own final selection.
| Holiday | 2027 date | Employer note |
|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | Friday, January 1 | Fixed national holiday |
| Epiphany | Wednesday, January 6 | Included in most regional calendars |
| Good Friday | Friday, March 26 | Widely observed; check the regional calendar |
| Labour Day | Saturday, May 1 | Fixed national holiday |
| Assumption of Mary | Sunday, August 15 | Sunday treatment differs by autonomous community |
| National Day of Spain | Tuesday, October 12 | Fixed national holiday |
| All Saints’ Day | Monday, November 1 | Included in most regional calendars |
| Constitution Day | Monday, December 6 | Included in most regional calendars |
| Immaculate Conception | Wednesday, December 8 | Included in most regional calendars |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | Fixed national holiday |
Maundy Thursday and Easter Monday are not observed in the same way across Spain.
Some communities include Maundy Thursday. Others include Easter Monday. A few include both.
Important Weekend Holidays in 2027
Three major dates need extra attention in 2027.
| Holiday | Calendar date | What employers should check |
|---|---|---|
| Labour Day | Saturday, May 1 | There is no universal Monday substitute in regional calendars |
| Assumption of Mary | Sunday, August 15 | The rest day may move to Monday or be replaced by another holiday |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | There is no universal Monday substitute in regional calendars |
A national holiday falling on a Saturday does not automatically appear as a Monday holiday in every autonomous community calendar.
Separate rules may apply when a public holiday overlaps an employee’s normal weekly rest day.
Employers should check:
- the employee’s working pattern;
- the applicable collective agreement;
- and current case law.
Notable Regional Differences in 2027
Several 2027 calendars contain unusual substitutions or local arrangements.
| Region | Important 2027 difference |
|---|---|
| Basque Country | The holiday that would normally fall on Saint Joseph’s Day, 19 March, is transferred to Thursday, October 7 |
| Navarra | Friday, December 3 is designated as one of the two local holidays across the whole of Navarra |
| Catalonia — Aran | Easter Monday on March 29 is replaced in Aran by Aran Day on Thursday, June 17 |
| Balearic Islands | Saint Stephen’s Day on December 26 is not included in the region-wide 2027 labour calendar |
| Catalonia | Saint Stephen’s Day on December 26 is not included in the region-wide 2027 labour calendar |
The absence of Saint Stephen’s Day from a region-wide calendar does not prevent municipalities from choosing their own local holidays through the normal process.

Employees in Aran should therefore not be assigned both Easter Monday and Aran Day as regional holidays.

| Epiphany | Wednesday, January 6 | — |
| Saint Joseph’s Day | Friday, March 19 | — |
| Maundy Thursday | Thursday, March 25 | — |

| Constitution Day | Monday, December 6 | — |
| Immaculate Conception | Wednesday, December 8 | — |

Important 2027 note: The table contains 13 common dates because Saint Francis Xavier Day on December 3 is designated as one of the two local holidays across the whole of Navarra.
Each municipality then selects one additional local holiday.
This gives employees the normal maximum of 14 holidays rather than creating an extra fifteenth holiday.
✅ Valencian Community — Public Holidays 2027
Verification status: Official 2027 calendar established by Decree 42/2026.
| Holiday | 2027 date | Observance / note |
|---|---|---|
| New Year’s Day | Friday, January 1 | — |
| Epiphany | Wednesday, January 6 | — |
| Saint Joseph’s Day | Friday, March 19 | — |
| Good Friday | Friday, March 26 | — |
| Easter Monday | Monday, March 29 | — |
| Labour Day | Saturday, May 1 | No substitute weekday listed |

| All Saints’ Day | Monday, November 1 | — |
| Constitution Day | Monday, December 6 | — |
| Immaculate Conception | Wednesday, December 8 | — |
| Christmas Day | Saturday, December 25 | No substitute weekday listed |
Important change: Saint John’s Day on June 24 is not a region-wide Valencian holiday in 2027.
Individual municipalities can still select it as a local holiday.
Do Not Forget the Two Local Holidays
The autonomous community table is not the employee’s complete calendar.
Each municipality can add up to two traditional local holidays.
Employees working in cities such as:
- Madrid;
- Barcelona;
- Seville;
- Valencia;
- Alicante;
- or Málaga
may therefore have different local dates, even when they follow the same national framework.
Navarra Works Differently
Navarra has already designated Saint Francis Xavier Day on December 3 as one local holiday throughout the autonomous community.
Each municipality then adds one more local holiday.
Local holidays are paid and non-recoverable within the annual maximum.
Working on Public Holidays in Spain
Public holidays are normally paid days off.
However, some businesses must continue operating.
This is common in:
- healthcare;
- hospitality;
- transport;
- retail;
- emergency services;
- manufacturing;
- and businesses using continuous shifts.
The first place to check is the employee’s collective bargaining agreement.
It may provide:
- additional pay;
- compensatory time off;
- another rest day;
- or more generous conditions.
Where exceptional technical or organisational reasons make holiday work necessary, and no compensatory rest is provided, Article 47 of Royal Decree 2001/1983 provides for the hours worked to be paid with a minimum 75% increase.
This is a minimum legal framework.
A collective agreement can provide better terms.
What Happens When a Holiday Falls on a Sunday?
The Workers’ Statute provides for the rest day linked to a national holiday falling on Sunday to move to the following Monday.
Autonomous communities can then use the available transferred date when building their own calendar.
The 2027 calendars show several different approaches.
| Region | Treatment of the Sunday holiday in 2027 |
|---|---|
| Andalusia | Assumption rest day moves to Monday, August 16 |
| Castile and León | Assumption rest day moves to Monday, August 16 |
| Extremadura | Assumption rest day is used on Monday, October 11 |
| Galicia | The regional calendar uses Galician Literature Day on May 17 |
| Cantabria | The calendar uses Our Lady of Bien Aparecida on September 15 |
| Murcia | The calendar uses Region of Murcia Day on June 9 |
| Balearic Islands | Easter Monday is selected in place of the August 15 rest day |
This is why employers should use the published regional calendar rather than applying one automatic rule.
What Happens When a Holiday Falls on a Saturday?
Spain does not have one rule that automatically moves every Saturday holiday to Monday in the official regional calendar.
In 2027:
- Labour Day is on Saturday, May 1;
- Catalonia National Day is on Saturday, September 11;
- Valencian Community Day is on Saturday, October 9;
- Christmas Day is on Saturday, December 25.
The correct treatment can depend on:
- the employee’s normal working pattern;
- whether Saturday is already a weekly rest day;
- the applicable collective agreement;
- and current court decisions.
Do not assume that an employee automatically loses the holiday simply because it falls on Saturday.
Employers Must Prepare an Annual Labour Calendar
Spanish employers must prepare an annual labour calendar.
A copy must be displayed in a visible place at each workplace.
The calendar should show:
- working days;
- national holidays;
- autonomous community holidays;
- local holidays;
- weekly rest days;
- and any agreed substitute or compensatory dates.
For a company with several workplaces, this may mean creating a separate calendar for each location.
Best Practices for Small Businesses
Use the Employee’s Actual Work Location
Do not assign holidays based only on the company’s registered office.
Use the autonomous community and municipality where the employee normally works.
Add Local Holidays Separately
A regional calendar is not complete until the municipal holidays have been added.
Record Both the Original and Observed Date
This is especially important when a Sunday holiday is moved or replaced.
Check the Collective Agreement
The agreement may determine:
- holiday pay;
- compensatory rest;
- shift premiums;
- and what happens when a holiday overlaps a weekly rest day.
Review Provisional Calendars
At the review date, final calendars still needed to be confirmed for:
- Aragon;
- Asturias;
- the Community of Madrid;
- Ceuta;
- and Melilla.
Do not turn provisional dates into employee entitlement until the relevant authority publishes the final calendar.
Publish the Company Calendar Early
Employees should know which dates apply before they begin booking annual leave.
A Simpler Way to Manage Spanish Public Holidays
Keep one clear record of:
- where each employee works;
- which autonomous community calendar applies;
- which local holidays apply;
- which dates have been transferred;
- and how holiday work is compensated.
TimeOff.Management lets you create different holiday calendars and assign them to the right employees.
Your team in Andalusia does not need to share the same calendar as your employees in Catalonia, Madrid, or the Canary Islands.
Managers can see holidays, annual leave, sickness, and other absences together.
That makes staffing easier and reduces mistakes.
Start a 30-day free trial — no card needed.
Key Points for Employers
