Can I set unlimited holiday or PTO for employees?

1 min read By TimeOff Support

Yes. Unlimited Allowance can be used when employees do not have a fixed yearly holiday or PTO balance.

Employees can still request leave, managers can still approve or decline it, and leave usage remains recorded.

How do I set up Unlimited Allowance?

Go to:

Settings → Employee policies → Unlimited Allowance

You can apply the policy to:

  • selected employees;
  • departments;
  • locations.

This means part of your organisation can use Unlimited Allowance while other employees continue to have a standard annual allowance.

What changes for employees?

When Unlimited Allowance applies:

  • the shared yearly allowance balance is hidden;
  • employees can still request leave;
  • approved and pending leave is still recorded;
  • normal approval rules still apply;
  • individual leave-type limits can still apply.

For example, your company could offer unlimited holiday while still setting a separate limit for another leave type.

Is this the same as setting a leave type to “No effect on allowance”?

No.

Unlimited Allowance changes how the employee’s overall yearly allowance is managed.

No effect on allowance is a setting on an individual leave type and means requests for that leave type do not change the employee’s main allowance balance.
